In our city, “soul” isn’t just a word. It’s a feeling, it’s a movement, it’s a vibe. As Memphians, we wear soul with pride. Our city isn’t just the birthplace of musical icons or the city where food, music, and culture come to life.

Our city’s soul is described by generosity that knows no bounds and the thousands of Memphians building community with each other on the daily. It’s the activism that stirring in our hearts, pushing each other and the world to see better and do better. It’s in the limitless innovation fueling insatiable curiosity and so, so much more. Memphis has always been a place of big hearts and even bigger ideas, where the spirit of soul finds its home. So, when you’re seeing your fellow Memphians’ faces across the city, you’re seeing a mirror reflecting our collective pride.

We’ll be sharing stories of how your fellow Memphians connect with our city through food, fitness, music, and so much more! Be sure to keep an eye out for billboards across the city featuring some familiar faces!

Meet CHEF MO

Chef Monique Williams is a celebrated Memphis-based chef known for her creative take on Southern cuisine as the brilliant mind behind Biscuits and Jams! She has built a reputation for her innovative dishes that honor Memphis’ rich culinary heritage while pushing the boundaries of traditional Southern cooking. Chef Mo has been featured across the city and country and her expertise and vibrant personality have made her a prominent figure in Memphis’ thriving food scene.

What are your top 3 local people, places, things, or organizations?

Epicenter is one of my favorite non-profits in Memphis. It provides so much support for new and growing businesses. It has truly been a godsend for people in the food industry.  Feast & Graze (Cristina McCarter) at the Brooks Museum.  Great food, amazing exhibits, and awesome music on Thursdays. Dos Hermanos (Chef Eli Townsend) at the Cossitt Library…those Salmon Croquettes on Thursdays are everything as well as the Tiny Kitchen concerts.

How does Memphis as a city inspire you or impact the work that you do?

I grew up in the Rozelle-Annesdale area of Memphis and it was full of community and love. Biscuits & Jams is a representation of that for me. As a local restaurateur, I strive to hire people from the community, mentor people with the vision of owning their own restaurant or small business as well as be a light in Downtown Memphis.

What are you most excited to see happening in Memphis?

I am excited to see the growth and the revitalization of the downtown area between Madison and Jefferson.

Is there another Memphian who has inspired you, impacted the work that you do, or who you’d like to shout out?

Luis Toro of City and State and the former owner of The Liquor Store. When I first opened up Biscuits & Jams, Luis helped me so much with figuring things out. He will always be one of my favorite people. See you soon Luis!!

How do you hope to inspire change in Memphis?

By being an active member in our community…creating jobs, mentoring, and making myself available to push Memphis forward in a positive way.

The 901 has a ton of local restaurants in Memphis that are changing the game. With summer right around the corner, it’s the perfect season to try new things and treat yourself to some delicious bites around town. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite dinner spots around Memphis so all you have to do is eat and enjoy!

Located in the Canopy Hotel, this trendy restaurant serves up Spanish, American, and Italian-inspired bites with a selection of craft cocktails. You can grab everything from breakfast to dessert at this swanky spot, and they offer weekend brunch menus worth trying. They also offer new, seasonal menu items, like their latest sticky pork belly so how about stopping by to see them for yourself?

Ben Yay’s

Step off the South Main Trolley Line and into this authentic gumbo shop. Who says you have to take a trip to New Orleans for some Creole cuisine? This local spot will easily satisfy your cravings for crawfish, po’boys, and other Louisiana classics. Check out their lunch special for a cup of soup and half po’boy.

Alchemy Memphis

Alchemy + Salt|Soy

Find New American dishes, Japanese bites, and craft cocktails at Alchemy and Salt|Soy. This spot in Cooper-Young has patio seating, perfect for enjoying this spring in Memphis. And you get tapas-style eats while sipping on tasty drinks, so be sure to stop by during their Happy Hour.

Mulan

Mulan has locations around Memphis, so you’re never far from delicious Asian food. Indulge in classic favorites like spring rolls, pad Thai, fried rice, and more when you stop by this local eatery. You can even order online to bring it home for an at-home date night or family dinner.

The Second Line

The Second Line

Stop by The Second Line for lunch through Sunday steak dinner for some Cajun cuisine. Their Swamp Bar has a wide selection of cocktails to satiate your thirst, and you can pair them with authentic Creole bites for an unforgettable experience. Our recommendation: their new Elvis cake that’ll have you feeling like the king himself.

Los Comales

Enjoy Mexican and Tex-Mex flavors at this Bluff City restaurant. You can find them on Madison or Perkins and indulge in their daily specials, craft cocktails, and authentic recipes. One bite worth trying is their unique cheesecake burrito for dessert. Trust us, it’s worth the trip!

Good Fortune Co.

Good Fortune

Stop by Memphis’ first scratch-made noodle and dumpling shop on Main. (Even Guy Fieri loves this local spot!) If the colorful restaurant doesn’t draw you in, then the food definitely will. This menu has everything from small bites to rice bowls, with new drinks constantly being added. Try their sake flight and noodle bowl for a Triple-D-worthy meal.

JEM

JEM asks you to “just enjoy the moment” with its fine dining made approachable outlook. This restaurant is located in the Edge District, and they’re the perfect date night spot for some elevated takes on classic meals. Their homemade gnocchi will have you coming back for more!

While most people may know Memphis because of Elvis or our musical ties, one thing that any traveler coming to this city will truly remember is our food. And honestly, that’s a big reason why so many of us love the 901! We’ve got some of the best dessert shops and bakeries around town. So, let’s take a look at just a handful that you should try.

Jerry’s Snow Cones

If you haven’t tried a Jerry’s snow cone, wyd?? This staple of the 901 serves up snow cones with a dollop of ice cream known as a supreme, along with other tasty treats like dipped cheesecake and banana splits. Visit one of their two local stores for an unforgettable dessert.

350 Baked

Looking for some vegan dessert options? Then you might just want to try 350 Baked, an online store with offerings around the city (like at the Kitchen Co-Op in Cordova). They also offer non-vegan options, but trust us, all of their sweet treats are worth trying!

Sugar Ghost Ice Cream and Bubble Tea

This spot serves us homemade ice cream and bubble tea that everyone can enjoy. With their wide selection of treats, even vegans and gluten-free dieters can get a scoop or a drink. Just pop by their store on Broad for a bite!

Milk Dessert Bar

This local shop has just about every kind of dessert you could want: cakes, shakes, and even cookie dough. Be sure to check out their seasonal offerings for limited-edition flavors you’ll want to grab before they’re gone. You can even order a custom cake for your wedding, party, or other get-togethers.

901 Bakes

Though there’s no storefront for these treats, 901 Bakes can serve up some delicious pastries, cakes, and more for your next event or party. You can check them out at markets around town, like the Cooper-Young Farmers Market on the weekend. And see what they’re cooking up by visiting their Instagram.

Muddy’s Bake Shop

We couldn’t end this list without sharing a classic! Muddy’s has been serving up some of the city’s favorite cakes, cookies, pies, and more quite a while and, if you haven’t been, you should definitely add this spot to your list!

There’s so much to love about Memphis, from the history to the music and even the Bass Pro Pyramid in all its strange glory. But one thing that makes this city truly great is the wide array of food options. And there’s no shortage of truly unique places to eat in Memphis. Whether it’s their menu or their entire aesthetic, we want to share some of the best one-of-a-kind spots around town that you’re gonna love!

The Hen House

Looking for a cozy wine bar perfect for a girls’ night or brunch? The Hen House was made with those vibes in mind, with eats perfect for sharing with the table and one-of-a-kind drinks you’ll love.

The Beauty Shop Restaurant

No list of unique Memphis restaurants would be complete without mentioning The Beauty Shop, a former curl-and-dye spot that Priscilla Presley herself used to frequent. Now, it’s a ’50s-style eatery that still has hair dryers at select tables, serving up delicious foods from brunch to dinner.

Global Café

Global Café is an international food hall with a menu as eclectic and unique as its chefs who cook recipes from their home countries. Try authentic dishes from all over the world right here in Memphis at an affordable price.

Tiger and Peacock

Come for the rooftop views, but stay for the delicious food at Tiger and Peacock on Overton Square. This spot has dramatic and “wild” decor that’s definitely Instagram-worthy, and their drink and snack menus will keep the party going until closing time.

The Farmer

For a taste of the South with an upscale spin, try The Farmer at Railgarten. This restaurant’s eco-friendly focus and sleek decor elevate any dining experience. You’ve really got to try their deviled eggs for yourself!

Memphis Whistle

Between the unique cocktails and moody aesthetic, Memphis Whistle is one place that needs to be experienced. They even offer vegan bites on their menu and a rotation of seasonal desserts. This may soon become your favorite spot.

Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza

Tamboli’s is a downtown eatery with authentic Italian fare, and the restaurant itself offers beautiful views of Madison with its large windows. Between their brilliant twists on classic foods and unique decor, this is one spot you’ll want to visit.

Bishop – Central Station Hotel

You don’t need to stay at the Central Station Hotel to enjoy Bishop, although you likely won’t want to leave once you step inside. This upscale French-inspired eatery serves breakfast through dinner and drinks to go with every meal, with modern French vibes in its decor to match the menu.

Spring is right around the corner and any Memphian knows that means patio season is approaching! The best way to enjoy the warmer weather? Heading out for brunch! Looking for the best brunch in Memphis? We’ve got you covered!

The Beauty Shop

If you’re in Midtown, you’re not going to want to miss out on one of the best brunch spots in Memphis. Not only do they have a killer cocktail program, but they have some of the most unique (and delicious) brunch menus in the city. You can stick with a classic mimosa or spice it up with pineapple + vanilla bean-infused vodka. As for the food? The chilaquiles and watermelon + wings are two dishes you have to taste!

SOB

Heading south of Beale St.? You should try, well, South of Beale! This restaurant is a long time local favorite and their brunch is outstanding. You can grab a mimosa (and you should), but if you’re looking to try out the espresso martini trend this is a great place to do it! Thinking about the food, there are tons of great menu items–shoutout to the duck fried rice. But you should give their loco moco a try! It’s their take on the Hawaiian classic and is the perfect addition to any brunch adventure!

The Liquor Store

If you’re in the mood for brunch every single day of the week, this would be one of the best brunch spots in Memphis for you! Their menu has all the classic breakfast items you could want plus some seriously delicious burgers, sandwiches, and more. If you’re into pork, try out the Cuban sandwich or add their Cuban pork as your meat selection for any of the breakfast plates!

Staks Pancakes

Wake up early for this one–Stacks Pancakes gets busy early! With good reason too–the food is delicious! In need for a family-friendly place? This is it. With tons of locations across the Mid-South, there’s probably a spot that’s close by. Our recommendations: start with the sausage skewers, grab their Stak of the month, and build your own omelet!

If there’s one thing you should know (or do know) about our city, it’s that Memphians love to eat. Whether it’s the classics like soul food or Memphis BBQ or something new and a little swanky, our restaurant scene cooks up delicious dishes no matter the style. In the market for something new to add to your “must eat” lists? There are so many new restaurants in Memphis Our team’s resident foodie put together a list of restaurants they’re excited to check out or have added to their favorites!

This list is by no means exhaustive so, if you have a restaurant that we should know about, be sure to reach out and tag us on Instagram or TikTok @wearememphistn!

South Main

The Lobbyist

new restaurants in Memphis - The Lobbyist

Jimmy Gentry’s new restaurant isn’t just located in the former Swanky’s spot near The Chisca and Catherine + Mary’s, it’s gotten a lot of buzz! The menu focuses on using what’s in season/sourced from farmers in the area and I’m all about a hyper-local restaurant. Their cocktail program also focuses on adding a little twist to the drinks we know and love. As a gin and tonic fanatic, I’m definitely here for new bar programs that stick to the classics while adding a little ~spice~ to their menus.

Item I’m excited to try: the pasta with pork sofrito, garlic, tarragon, grana padano, and panna gratta

IBIS

new restaurants in memphis - Ibis, plates of brunch food

If a restaurant has a great aesthetic, chances are I’m going to want to give it a try. And, as far as new restaurants in Memphis goes, Ibis definitely delivers! Not only do they have a delicious looking dinner menu, but the brunch looks insane. The space has both an upstairs and a downstairs, which gives plenty of space for those looking for a friends night out but is also cozy enough for those solo “man I answered way too many emails and socialized way too much and just need a good drink” moments.

I also totally respect when a cocktail lounge has a good mix of both snacky, small plates and larger, entree sized portions!

Item I’m excited to try: the build your own brunch bowl and (bonus) smokin’ gin + phonics cocktail

new restaurants in memphis - ramen

Good Fortune Co. (New-ish)

Okay, Memphis foodie community. I know this isn’t technically super new, but I think Good Fortune definitely deserves a shoutout. I’m a massive ramen fan and get way too pumped when the city gets a new ramen or Japanese spot. While the ramen, of course, is delicious, you’re not going to want to miss out on the dumplings. And I totally mean it when I say you have to try all of them. No questions asked. Bring friends if you need, but you have to try them all!

My recommendation: spicy pork ramen + all of the dumplings

East Memphis ( + Beyond)

Restaurant Iris (New-ish)

After 15 years in Midtown, Chef Kelly English has moved Iris to East Memphis! So, while this isn’t a new restaurant in Memphis, it’s new to the space and should totally count. As a fan of Second Line and Panta, I can’t wait to try the elevated Southern deliciousness happening at Restaurant Iris. I’ve mentioned it a ton before, but aesthetics are just so important when I’m checking out new spots–Iris is absolutely beautiful!

Item I’m excited to try: Crab Au Gratin with jumbo lump crab, creme fraiche, sherry, brioche crouton, browned bearnaise

Limelight (Germantown)

If you remember the old Farm + Fries (rip) building, you’re already familiar with the Limelight space! However, it’s been completely renovated and the concept is sooo completely different from burgers and fries. There’s Southern, Asian, and French influences throughout the menu and, honestly, it’s kind of hard to pick just one thing I’d like to try! If I had to pick…

Item I’m excited to try: pork belly skewers with thai chili, honeycrisp apple, shoyu glaze, and watercress

Again, this isn’t a complete list of all the new restaurants in Memphis, but it’s a start! If you have any recommendations for restaurants we should check out, make sure you share them with us!

Barbeque. Beale Street. Graceland. Blues, soul, rock’n’roll.

Memphis is famous worldwide for a lot of things — but for everything we’re famous for, there’s something else you might not know that makes our city special.

In this article, we look at seven things most people know about Memphis, plus another seven things they should know about.

Memphis is famous for its BBQ. Anyone who knows BBQ knows that Memphis is renowned for its slow-smoked pork. If you’re looking for all the Memphis BBQ restaurants that should be on your radar, we’ve even put together the Memphis BBQ trail for you!

…But Memphis is a serious wing city, too. Buffalo may have invented the chicken wing, but Memphis perfected it. We’re home to hundreds of amazing wing establishments and even host the World Championship Hot Wing Contest & Festival.

When it comes to wings, no other southern city compares. Check out our signature flavor, honey gold, at iconic local spots like Crumpy’s, Wing Guru, All-Star Hot Wings, and so many more.

Memphis is famous for Graceland, the world-renowned abode of Elvis Presley, which welcomes 500,000 fans of The King each year.

…But Memphis is also home to numerous arts and culture museums that are worth a stop. From the Stax Museum of American Soul Music (made famous by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Isaac Hayes) to Sun Studio (made famous by BB King, Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Roy Orbison), to the Dixon Gallery & Gardens — among other art museums — art history of all kinds is alive and honored in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for being home to blues, soul, and rock’n’roll — not to mention chart-topping hip hop.

…But every style of music is thriving in Memphis. From critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters like Julien Baker, to Grammy-nominated folk-soul artist Valerie June, all the way to our electronic music scene, music of all genres is in the water in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for the Mississippi River, with locals and tourists alike exploring its shores.

…But Memphis is also home to Tom Lee Park. Situated on the river, this historic park is being transformed into one of the premier riverfronts in the country. A massive expansion project is currently underway, with 1,000 new trees, a playground, event space, and much more.

Memphis is famous for Beale Street, a music mecca in downtown Memphis, and a pivotal place in the history of blues music.

…But the Cooper-Young neighborhood has plenty of history to offer, too. From historic homes to the church basement Johnny Cash recorded his first album, to countless restaurants, bars, and breweries to explore, it’s got everything you’re looking for and more — not to mention the annual Cooper-Young Festival, which hosts 100,000 visitors for food, music, and more each year.

Memphis is famous for its FedEx headquarters, a Fortune 50 company employing approximately 30,000 Memphians.

…But other Fortune 500 Companies like International Paper and AutoZone also call Memphis home, collectively employing hundreds of thousands of Memphians. Discover dozens of top Memphis employers here.

Memphis is famous for the National Civil Rights Museum, built around the famed Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. For over 50 years, this museum has educated visitors from far and wide about the Civil Rights Movement.

…But Memphis is also home to countless Black-led endeavors that champion arts, culture, activism, and so much more. One example: our friends over at nonprofits TONE and Unapologetic are working to develop the Orange Mound Tower, which is set to become a mixed-use arts, business, and housing space in one of the original Black communities in the United States.

Now you know!

Black History Month is a pivotal time in Memphis; not only because our city has been at the center of Black innovation and achievement for generations, but also because we still continue to see Memphis’ Black community influence worldwide culture today. However, part of the importance of this month shouldn’t be forgotten all of the other months throughout the year, so we’re here to share some black owned restaurants in Memphis you can support year-round. And with Memphis being such a foodie city, it’s no wonder we wanted to highlight these in particular!

Da Guilty Vegan Food Truck

Being a vegan in the city of barbecue may be rough at times, but Da Guilty Vegan is here to demonstrate that good food can still be animal-free! Whether you’re craving barbecue nachos, a burger, or even some delicious sandwiches, this place has a wide rotating selection of foods you’ll want to try again and again. You can usually spot this food truck down Houston Levee, but if you want to double-check where this truck will be stopping next, check out their social media for all of the updates.

Brain Food Memphis

Think fresh, natural, organic food can’t possibly be hearty? Think again. BrainFood in Memphis uses the best ingredients to create scrumptious, mouth-watering dishes that’ll make you come back for more. Though they don’t have a physical location, you can order curbside or delivery from anywhere to your home or office. They cater, too, so check out their social and website for all of the current servings, availability, and more.

Waffle Iron

When you have breakfast (or brunch) at Waffle Iron, you’ll understand why Food Network named them one of the 50 best waffles in America! You can even take home boxes of their sweet potato pancake and waffle mix if you just can’t get enough. Check out their website, social media, and Collierville location to snag some of their delicious goodies for yourself.

Jamaican Queen Food Truck

The search for Jamaican cooking won’t have you traveling too far with Jamaican Queen’s food truck. If you’ve got a hankering for jerk spices and scrumptious sides, this menu will have something for you! You can’t miss the truck painted with the Jamaican flag, but just in case you want to catch it near you, follow them on Facebook for updates.

Chicken Coop

If you’re on the search for some amazing wings, Chicken Coop is the place for you! So many tantalizing flavors and combinations, how could you possibly choose just one? They don’t just serve up wings, though, offering burgers, hot dogs, and many more things to delight your taste buds. Check out their site for more information, or follow their social media to see what’s new on the menu.

I Love Waffle Cream

We can’t deny we love chicken and waffles, but sometimes you just want waffles and ice cream instead, you know? This is where I Love Waffle Cream excels, offering some delicious waffle and ice cream combos. You may even brave the Memphis winter to get one of these cold treats! (They also have an Elvis-inspired flavor, because would the menu be complete without it?) Find the food truck on their website or social media to see where they’ll be stopping next!

Grillmaster Chew Food Truck

Since Memphis has its own food truck park, it’s no wonder so many amazing food trucks have made this list, including Grillmaster Chew. The taste of BBQ  never gets old in this city and this food truck offers some yummy takes on some classics, like ribs, sandwiches, and barbecue nachos. Find them on Facebook to keep up with their latest locations.

Dr. Bean’s Coffee and Tea

For your caffeine fix, Dr. Bean’s Coffee and Tea has you covered. Since they source their own beans, you know you’re in for some unique flavor profiles with genuine thought and care behind them. You can shop their coffees online or visit their location to enjoy a fresh cup for yourself. Follow them on social for specials and check their website to place an order.

Know some other local eats and treats that are Black-owned that we should know about? Tell us in the comments! We’d love to support some more local, small businesses!

When the weather turns colder… a comforting bowl of soup in Memphis can hit the spot! Whether you prefer  beef, chicken, shrimp, tofu, veggies, and/or seafood; a broth or cream base; crackers or a bread bowl, there’s a soup for your every craving in Memphis. Some of the top chefs in the city spoon out the comforting slurp-worthy menu items regularly— but especially now that the temperatures are falling.

From a classic cup of chowder to a bowl of gumbo, find your favorite at these five soup places:

Bayou

Bayou is known for there cajun style soups that come in a cup or bowl to suit your appetite.

The Soup Sampler is a perfect menu choice if you’re like me and tend to be indecisive. It allows you to try all 4 of their slurp delicious menu items. There is nothing better to represent a true taste of New Orleans than gumbo, a filling soup that’s prepared with either seafood or with duck and sausage at Bayou. The alligator chilli and the shrimp and crawfish bisque are also two other cajun style soups that are on the menu. The soup sampler is highly recommended.

Flame Ramen

The ramen is the signature dish at Flame Ramen– *hence the name*. It’s the newest Ramen place to open in the city, located on Union. Each bowl is packed with intense flavor and their menu has a variety of broth types to suit any tastebud. They’ve got the classic tonkotsu and miso, but don’t be afraid to shake it up with their super spicy, shio, or tan tan bowls. With toppings like a soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, wood ear mushroom and more, this spot should definitely be on your list. Pro tip: grab the spicy ramen and gyoza and use some of the broth as a dipping sauce. So. Good.

Stone Soup Cafe & Market

The Cooper-Young restaurant Stone Soup is a great place to cozy, comforting, and humbly high-quality. They sell gourmet soup mixes that will help you create amazing dishes at home. Choose four from their lineup of Gumbolaya, Multi Vegetable, Parmesan Kale with Italian Sausage and Creamy Herbed Tomato Bisque. Stone Soup is all about fresh, locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients, and we love it’s dedication to local producers. Their signature Stone Soups are as hearty as they come, featuring local beef, smoked sausage, and other savory items. Each of their soups pairs perfectly with sandwiches, salads, wraps, and burgers.

Cheffie’s Cafe

Cheffie’s menu features a variety of seasonal soups made with the freshest ingredients. Rich, deli-style soups such as chicken tortilla, tomato basil, hearty vegetable, and chicken noodle, all served piping hot with wholesome ingredients. They also have a rotating selection of specialty soups to give you something new to experience with every visit.

Taco’s N Ganas

Taco’s N Ganas consomé is great to dip birria tacos in, but it’s also the perfect soup to just enjoy on a cold day. It’s a hearty soup that includes onion, potatoes, carrots, beef and a delicious blend of seasonings. The soup is served piping hot and delicious, the best way to describe it is… picture everything you love about a super savory and filling pot roast, in a soup that’s packed with even more flavor and comfort.

Be sure to let us know your favorite soup place in the comments!

While Thanksgiving in Memphis has many things in its favor (reuniting with friends and family,  throwing dietary concerns to the wind, drinking wine at noon), it also comes with plenty of headaches, such as a grueling cooking schedule and even more burdensome after-meal cleaning. With that in mind, there are plenty of Memphis food options and fantastic restaurants who are willing to do the dirty work for you.

So whether you’re looking for comfort food or something a little fancier, here are seven of our favorite local restaurants that you can rely on this holiday season, leaving you more time to focus on the things that really matter (like arguing with your drunk uncle about canned versus homemade cranberry sauce).

*Be warned – you’ll need to plan ahead, so be sure to check out each restaurant’s deadline for reservations or placing pick-up orders.

Bishop
545 S. Main St. (Inside Central Station)

If you’re a foodie residing in Memphis, it’s almost inevitable that you’ve eaten at one of Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman’s many excellent restaurants. Their newest venture, a trendy French Brasserie called Bishop residing inside Central Station, proves once again that this culinary duo might just be the Bluff City’s most talented restaurateurs.

This year, Bishop will be open on Thanksgiving day!

Capriccio Grill
149 Union Ave. (Inside The Peabody)

Known as one of the finest steakhouses in Memphis, the Capriccio Grill at the Peabody will be serving a special three-course meal between noon and 10pm on Thanksgiving day.

Prefer a nice, medium rare steak over turkey? They’ve got a filet mignon with lobster mornay sauce on the menu that’s to die for. From its warm and elegant dining room outfitted to host everything from intimate gatherings to a large Thanksgiving feast, let the Capriccio Grill be your home away from home this holiday season.

 The Complicated Pilgrim
21 S. Cooper Street (Inside The Memphian)

If we were basing our Thanksgiving meal location on name alone, then it would be hard to find a more fitting restaurant than The Complicated Pilgrim, the beautiful and inviting restaurant located in Midtown’s The Memphian hotel.

The restaurant will be offering a specialty four course meal from noon to 8pm on Thanksgiving Day. With scrumptious fare ranging from lemon braised chicken thighs to red velvet cheesecake, there’s nothing complicated about a holiday feast at the Complicated Pilgrim.

Felicia Suzanne’s
Main Street, between Monroe & Madison Ave.

Few restaurants are able to blend Southern comfort food with fine dining better than long-time Memphis restaurant staple Felicia Suzanne’s, which makes this local eatery an ideal source for an elegant yet familiar Thanksgiving dinner.

Their annual “Operation Turkey Day” menu is back yet again, featuring delectable twists on traditional favorites such as gulf oyster dressing and deviled eggs topped with salmon, caviar and bacon.

NOTE: Felicia Suzanne’s has temporarily closed their restaurant and will be re-opening their brand new location at 383 South Main Street in 2023!

Paulette’s
50 Harbor Town Square

For nearly 50 years, Paulette’s has been one of the most celebrated fine dining restaurants in Memphis, garnering a stellar reputation for their service, food, and atmosphere.

If you’re feeling a bit bougie this year, then head to Harbor Town and treat yourself to a three-course meal that includes uniquely delicious options such as lobster bisque, filet mignon, fresh baked pumpkin pie, or the tried-and-true turkey and dressing that’s hearty enough to round out any holiday dinner with family and friends.

Once gathered together in their classically Southern dining room and indulging in the beautifully presented entrees coupled with an impressive selection of fine wines, Paulette’s will quickly become your new home for the holidays.

Muddy’s Bake Shop
2497 Broad Ave.

It’s easy to think about Thanksgiving and immediately taste the turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, before you’ve even unfolded your napkin. But no Thanksgiving is truly complete until the dessert hits the table, and that’s where Muddy’s Bake Shop officially takes the cake.

Just get in close proximity to this old school, neighborhood bakery, and you’ll begin to sense the sweet and sugary aromas in the air. One step through the door and you’ll be elated by the sight of their always fresh, always made from scratch, homestyle southern classics.

Whether your gathering is in need of cookies, cakes, pies, or cupcakes, all of their soulful Memphis treats are made from high quality, locally sourced ingredients. Every delicious morsel is an explosion of flavor, guaranteed to liven up your Thanksgiving feast.

Memphis Toddy – Old Dominick Distillery
305 S. Front St.

Take a journey deep into the history of Memphis food and drink heritage, with a quick stop or a curated tour of the Old Dominick Distillery.

Just steps away from their original building, the now state-of-the-art facility and classic Memphis bar is steeped in the brand’s 150-year-old story. You’ll experience firsthand the dedication and passion this iconic Memphis distillery pours into every bottle.

Whether you’re looking to pick up a few local spirits for your Thanksgiving dinner or gather with friends and family to enjoy the sensory-infused tour and curated tasting experience, your time at the elevated, yet relaxed atmosphere will make for an unforgettable holiday excursion.

Riko’s Kickin’ Chickin
1329 Madison Avenue

What started back in 2014 as a flourishing Memphis food truck, Riko’s Kickin Chickin now a popular local eatery built on a love story so delicious you can taste it in every bite.

Known for its fiery sauces and uniquely Southern menu, this downtown Memphis hotspot has been kickin’ it big-time for years, thanks to a husband and wife duo so dedicated to perfection that they still hand-check every dish before it ever leaves the kitchen.

Stop in daily for some of the city’s best seasoned wings, available in flavors like Honey Garlic, BBQ, Lemon Pepper, and Jamaican Jerk. For a real Thanksgiving treat, you can’t go wrong with their one-of-a-kind Honey Gold Deep Fried Turkey.

Get your order in now, because you don’t want to miss this flavorful new take on a holiday classic!

We’re partnering with Latino Memphis to bring you Somos Memphis! A hub of content focused on sharing all the great endeavors, businesses, and more from Memphis’ Latin(e/x/o) community.  Latin(e/x/o)  culture isn’t a monolith–there are so many vibrant cultural aspects, forms of expression, and perspectives that come together to make Memphis the amazing city that it is. We can’t wait to share more stories with you!

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Oh! Desserts needs to be on your radar! Bakery genius Yolimar Flores makes sweet treats that are absolutely out of this world! Whether you’re looking for a perfectly designed cake, an insanely delicious pie, or another one of her many creative specialities, you’re sure to be pleased! We caught up with her to learn more about the business!

Tell us the background of your business! How did you get started and what inspired you?

I was raised in this beautiful picturesque artisan town called El Hatillo, Caracas, Venezuela. It has the perfect town square with a German bakery, a beautiful church, a quaint library, and our bakery. In the middle of our town square, there are palm trees and park benches where people from all ages gather and share stories. As a little girl being raised in the bakery environment, I would watch my grandma create elaborate, exquisite, and amazing desserts that, to this day, are a big part of our town square. Since then I knew that making such delicious desserts would be a part of my life. Being in Memphis a while and sharing with my coworkers, I realized that the desserts and flavors I knew didn’t exist here. I knew I wanted to share them with my co-workers. I would bring them a variety of cakes over time and one day a coworker asked me to make them a birthday cake. That moment is when it all started 5 years ago.

Your desserts look absolutely delicious! Which cake or dessert has been your favorite to make and why?

Definitely the “Marquesa de Chocolate”, key lime pie, and passion fruit pie. These desserts are out of this Earth and the flavor in each bite just hits the spot. Although I am a baker, if I am honest, baking anything and having that creative spark makes me happy. Especially when my clients send me messages or tag me on their posts saying how satisfied they are. That is what makes it all worth it.

How has Memphis’ Latin(o/e/x) community been a part of your own story?

Oh! Desserts would definitely not be the same without the community. In just a year the love and support from the community have been so gracious. It just shows that the desserts Oh! Desserts creates are loved and that we are doing a fantastic job of bringing tropical flavors to Memphis.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to start their own business?

I would definitely tell them to be patient and to be very dedicated, but, overall, to be very disciplined. It’s not just about wanting something; you have to be willing to put in the hours and most definitely the work. You will certainly see that the effort and endless work you put into your business will give you great satisfaction as it begins to grow.

What’s next for you and Oh!Desserts?

GROW, GROW, GROW!
I definitely want to incorporate more tropical flavors, new designs, and bring my hometown to Memphis with not just desserts but perhaps special seasonal traditional plates. Hopefully, I’d love to be at an expo where you all can come and taste a little piece of  Venezuela in this incredible melting pot of cultures.

Fall is the perfect time to cozy up and nourish your soul with some delicious Memphis soul food that tastes just like your grandmama made it. Get cozy with some delicious soul food in East Memphis with some of the most outstanding chefs and restaurateurs. The Bluff City has no shortage of great restaurants that stamp their soul food as the best in the city. Here are a few restaurants to try and be sure to drop your favorite soul food restaurant in Memphis and dish in the comments.

The Crock Pot 2

The Crock Pot 2’s setup is similar to cafeteria style…With food so tasty you’ll want to pull up to the counter to order up some deliciousness on a plate! This no frills spot is serving up soul food daily. Try the rib tips or pork chops with sides like mac and cheese and greens. Trust us, their sauce for pork chops is next level! The prices are super reasonable, and the fried chicken hits the spot every time!

Southern Hands Homestyle Cooking

Crispy chicken wings. Meat Loaf. Candied yams. Peach cobbler. Southern Hands has it all! You’ll come back again and again for their catfish fillets and affordably priced eats. The restaurant does have vegetable plates, too. However, I would highly recommend that this is where you come to get a fully loaded plate like… Chicken and Dressing or Fish and Spaghetti.

Patrick’s

Patrick’s East Memphis restaurant is a neighborhood bar & grille that has been a local Memphis gathering place for over 25 years, however they aren’t your typical “bar and grille”. They serve made-from-scratch home cooking, hand-cut aged steaks, and barbecue in a fun bar atmosphere.

Mahogany

Mahogany has all the good stuff! Think Memphis Soul Food with a Cajun spin. Collard greens, mac and cheese, oxtails, catfish, and grits. You’ll love the over-the-top presentation and heaping portions. Mahogany is located in the Chickasaw Oaks Plaza.

Prive (Soulfood Sunday)

Only great eats and gospel music at club levels at Prive on a Sunday! Memphis mogul, businessman, and artist Yo Gotti grew up in a family where his mother loved to cook. He opened up Prive and the rest is history…. his mother “Mama Mimms” throws down in the kitchen every Sunday; sharing with Memphis the family recipes. Expect delicious eats and a fun atmosphere with a superb Arnold Palmer at Prive!

We’re partnering with Latino Memphis to bring you Somos Memphis! A hub of content focused on sharing all the great endeavors, businesses, and more from Memphis’ Latinx community. Latin(e/x) culture isn’t a monolith–there are so many vibrant cultural aspects, forms of expression, and perspectives that come together to make Memphis the amazing city that it is. We can’t wait to share more stories with you!

We caught up with Jackie Mau, part founder and business manager for Greys Fine Cheese. You may have seen or visited the shop over off of Poplar and Mendenhall and it’s one of the best places in the city to great some great, gourmet cheeses! Keep reading to learn more about Mau and the businesses and get inspired on what to grab on your next stop at the shop!

We’d love to know more about you, the shop, and how you and Kurt got started with Greys!

Here is a little about me … I do all of Greys’ social media and all business-related activities.  I grew up in Miami and also lived abroad as a child in Central and South America. I had a career in Corporate America for many years.  I moved to Memphis a few years ago as I decided to leave the corporate world and become an entrepreneur. Long story short, after a trip to Paris early last year and visiting the most amazing cheese shops, the idea of opening our store came to fruition.

Kurt is the Cheesemonger extraordinaire and my life partner.  He is passionate about good cheese and is also a talented chef. Kurt has an interesting background.  He is originally from Nashville. He started his culinary journey in a hospital kitchen, then worked for a fitness company as part of a well-known podcast.  During this time, he also ran a successful meal prep business and has done a lot of work as a private chef.  His passion for food and cheese flows out of him. It is evident in all he does!

Kurt started making cheese boards for guests of my downtown Airbnbs and our business took off after friends of mine began to gift two years ago.  We were blessed to meet Fletcher Elkington, a commercial realtor, who showed us the space in which we are in.  We opened our doors in May and it has been a delightful journey to meet all of the wonderful Memphis Turophiles (cheese lovers).

LOVE Sandwich Saturdays and especially the nod to your heritage with the Cuban sandwich! We’d love to hear more about it!

Sandwich Saturdays were just going to be a one-time thing but then it took off.  Our Chef Harrison loves to come up with the most amazing sandwiches each week.  It has taken off as we have new and unique offerings every week.  We love that sometimes people line up outside before we open for our sandwiches.  We sell out within the hour sometimes!  We are grateful for this opportunity to serve Memphians these sandwiches.

The Cuban Sandwich is quite a success.  I’m Cuban-American, my dad was Cuban and growing up in Miami I grew up eating Cuban food.  I am very serious about keeping my Cuban food authentic which is why we fly the bread from a Miami Cuban bakery.  The key to the sandwich is the pork and the Cuban bread! We keep it real and authentic.

What’s your favorite thing that shop offers?

I love everything about the shop.  The fact that we can support local businesses by selling their products.  We also love to have many American cheeses as the US has some amazing creameries making award-wining cheeses.  But my most absolute favorite thing about the shop is the educational component via either our workshops or if you come into the store and sample and learn about a new cheese.

How have you plugged into the Memphis community or what’s your favorite part about being a local entrepreneur?

My favorite part is getting to know our customers, our turophiles as we like to call them.  Turophile is a connoisseur of cheese.  I also love collaborating and supporting other local businesses.  Being a local entrepreneur has really shown me the importance of supporting local businesses versus large corporations.

What’s up next for you guys and the shop?

We have big plans for the next few months.  Many of our turophiles want to ship our products to their friends and family so we will begin shipping specially curated gift boxes in the fall.  And who knows what the future brings, maybe other locations?  Stay tuned, we have big plans.

Four of Our Favorite Memphis Food Trucks https://wearememphis.com/play/food-drink/memphis-food-trucks/ Thu, 15 Jul 2021 20:12:47 +0000 https://wearememphis.com/?p=8083 Just a few years ago, food trucks were derided by some as a passing fad, a trend that would soon go the way of the once-trendy cereal cafe. Thankfully, those takes now look colder than, well, cereal. Today, it’s clear that food trucks are not only here to stay, but are often just as beloved as many brick-and-mortar restaurants. As one of America’s culinary capitals, it should come as no surprise that Memphis is blessed with a seemingly endless array of delicious options. After much hand-wringing and debate, here are five of our favorite local food trucks that you should check out ASAP.

From Thai to Mexican, and even unique specialties like smoked tuna, the streets of Memphis are lined with food trucks that are cooking up a storm and winning over hearts (and stomachs). As one of America’s culinary capitals, it should come as no surprise that Memphis is blessed with a seemingly endless array of delicious options. After much hand-wringing and debate, here are four of our favorite local food trucks in Memphis that you should check out ASAP.

Soi Number 9

Craving the complex and tantalizing flavors of Thai cuisine? Soi Number 9 has got your back (and your taste buds). This food truck takes you on a journey through Thailand’s street food scene, serving up dishes that burst with authentic flavors. From the iconic Pad Thai to the aromatic Massaman Curry, every bite is a passport to the bustling streets of Bangkok. Don’t miss their zesty Som Tum (green papaya salad) that’ll give your taste buds a wake-up call.

Chile Verde Food Truck

If you thought Memphis was all about barbecue, think again. Chile Verde Food Truck brings the flavors of Mexico to the streets, and they’re not holding back. From sizzling street tacos to loaded nachos topped with a rainbow of ingredients, this truck is a fiesta on wheels. The fusion of Mexican spices and Memphis flair creates a culinary experience that’ll have your taste buds doing the salsa.

Clay’s Smoked Tuna

For those who appreciate the finer things in life – like perfectly smoked seafood – Clay’s Smoked Tuna is a revelation. This food truck is a hidden gem that serves up smoked tuna like you’ve never tasted before. From melt-in-your-mouth smoked tuna sandwiches to refreshing tuna salads, Clay’s combines the heartiness of Southern comfort with the delicate flavors of the sea. It’s a true catch for seafood enthusiasts.

Say Cheese

Who doesn’t have a soft spot for a classic grilled cheese sandwich? Say Cheese takes this comfort food staple and turns it into a gourmet masterpiece. With an array of cheeses, breads, and creative toppings, this food truck is redefining what a grilled cheese can be. Whether you’re a fan of the classic cheddar and tomato combo or feeling adventurous with brie and fig jam, Say Cheese will melt your heart – one gooey bite at a time.

You’ve heard us and probably everyone else in town talk about how excited Memphians are for patio season. I mean, with great weather and so many local bartenders showing off their skills, there are plenty of reasons to be hyped! But it’s not just about the patios–it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Even though our friends at Central Station have the perfect patio for some South Main fun, their lobby bar, Eight & Sand, is where you need to be.

We caught up with Will Davenport, Eight & Sand’s general manager, and learned a little about him and how the cocktail program at the bar combines with the most chill atmosphere to make one unforgettable experience!

We Are Memphis: What do you love about working at Eight & Sand?

Will Davenport: I was born and raised in Memphis and I have so much love for this city and the people and stuff that comes out of here. I also have a really soft spot in my heart for Memphis music so here I get to blend my love of cocktails–we do a very Memphis forward program here where we try to highlight Memphis products and producers and locally owned companies through our menus and products that we bring in. So I’m happy to work on that side and also as far as the atmosphere we’ve got a killer music program.

WAM: What makes Eight & Sand different from any other bar in town?

Will: Most of my career, I was working in fine dining restaurants which I had a lot of fun with and it was where I was able to grow a lot of my knowledge and ability to build beverage programs. Eight & Sand has been a whole changeover. We’re a bar so I’m able to focus in on that. It provides a really fun atmosphere with great drinks behind it and making it very accessible–I want everyone to come in here and have a good time.

WAM: What are your top two favorite drinks to make?

Will: I love making a drink called Boulevardier it’s a negroni riff–I usually use rye whiskey in mine because I love the bite and the extra heat you get from that and then Campari which is a bitter orange liqueur and then just a good sweet vermouth usually those are done in equal parts but I usually bump the rye up on mine and drop the sweet vermouth down so you get this nice a little bit bitter but real boozy kind of whiskey style cocktail. I think it’s a nice little sipper. Another favorite is just a classic margarita. It’s actually my parents’ favorite cocktail, so I’ve got a lot of practice in!

WAM: What’s your favorite dish from the bar menu?

Will: That’s a tough one–I think I’m going to have to go with our wings. They’re just super tasty and they’ve got this sweet and spicy Asian style sauce and this blue cheese ranch on the side. I absolutely hate blue cheese, I can’t eat it with anything but with those wings it’s really really good.

WAM: What should someone order for the first time at Eight & Sand or their first time at the bar in general?

Will: Honestly what I encourage a lot of people to do is to just come up. We have a lot of talented, well-trained bartenders and just kind of come in. If you can’t find anything immediately off the menu, just ask them to whip you up something! We all do that, it’s one of our favorite things. It’s just a time to get creative and make something custom and unique for each individual person. But if that’s not your speed and you want something off the menu, I recommend an Andrew Michael Old Fashioned. It’s just a tried and true classic and it’s hard to beat.

WAM: If you could make a classic “Memphis” themed cocktail, what would you make? What about something more modern?

Will: For a classic one, just kind of taking our Old Fashioned on the menu is a great idea. I use Old Dominick’s Huling Station for the base in it and then we make bitters in-house to go along with it. It’s a very local thing. For a modern style–getting into spring and summer things I like to do that I don’t see very often are shandy style cocktails–so incorporating beer in some way. So I’d like to make some light patio sipper that has a cool local beer on top of it.

WAM: What is your advice to someone who is a beginner looking to get into mixology?

Will: I would say just have fun with it. The way I got into it was through cooking. I love to cook a lot so I took that passion and threw it into bartending. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you kind of just learn more every single day. Then, you get to a point where you’re just creating stuff. And sometimes it’s not going to be good–you’re going to make some bad stuff every now and then but don’t get discouraged by it. At the end of the day, you can just shoot it back and start over!

If you haven’t been to Eight & Sand yet, now’s the time! Check them out online here or follow them on Instagram @eightandsandmem

Cheers!

Just like the “Freshman 15”, weight gain during this Covid frenzy is created from stressors and unhealthy food while staying home.  This “Quarantine 15” can definitely be avoided, with the help of uplifting self-care and trying out healthy food alternatives from local restaurants here in the 901.  As we approach the ultimate holiday season, these restaurants can assist you in putting a healthy twist on your annual table spread with mouth-watering, nutritious meals for the whole family!

1: Imagine Vegan

Since 2011, owner Kristie Jeffrey changed the Memphis dining scene by presenting Imagine Vegan Cafe.  In the heart of the Cooper-Young area, we find a restaurant that provides delicious food and desserts without causing harm to animals.  For those that aren’t vegan, this would be a great place to try as it’ll encourage you to see that vegan food is real food for real people.  Priding themselves in that their food is “Where comfort meets compassion”, their menu features ordinary descriptions without the ordinary ingredients as they use tasty vegan substitutes.  They refrain from animal products and by-products.  Imagine Vegan has been featured in PETA, Forbes, Edible Memphis, Vegan Crunk, Veg News, and Will Travel for Vegan Food.

2: City Silo Table + Pantry

Owners Rebekah and Scott Tashie stand by their mission of being about community, as well as believing that “there’s a happy medium between eating trendy, healthy food that doesn’t fill you up and heavy southern, nap-inducing meals”.  At City Silo Table + Pantry, it’s guaranteed that you can be served food that’s nutritious for your body, as well as good for the earth considering that this establishment is Earth-conscious.  City Silo supports local farmers and has a strict guideline on their disposal and usage of supplies to help out with recycling and composting programs.  On their menu, you can find a plethora of options from breakfast to dinner, with items such as maple tempeh, cauliwings, salads, portabella burger, hearty grain bowls, acai bowls, smoothies, fresh juices, elixirs, tonics, kombucha, and more!!

3: Bedrock Eats & Sweets

It all started with two words: “paleo diet”.  Owner and chef, Brandi Marter, stands by her mission of, “Care about yourself, care about your family and your friends. Try harder. Eating life-sustaining food is such an easy way to start. It’s so much more worth it than you know.”  At Bedrock Eats & Sweets, customers won’t find any of their dishes prepared with gluten, refined sugars, nor processed foods.  Their menu contains tasty, healthy items such as various waffle combos, breakfast tacos, macro bowls, salads, smoked meat plates, and tons more!

4: Cheffie’s Café

Let it be known, that at Cheffie’s Café, you’re the chef as you call the shots on your fresh creation.  With an overflowing variety of top-quality meats, fresh produce, delicious toppings, and more, you get to concoct your own salad and sandwich!  Their menu includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.  They also serve pomegranate green tea and can offer catering for the holidays if your family wants to try a healthy twist to the annual holiday spread.

5: INSPIRE Community Café

What better way is there to inspire others while inspiring yourself?  INSPIRE Community Café was established on the basis to not only create job opportunities with meaningful living wages but also to serve healthy and delicious food!  Might I also add that their food is not only good for the body, but for the soul as well. Ten percent of their net profits go towards nonprofit organizations with the initiatives of economic and racial justice. As for their menu, they serve everything from brunch to dinner, with several vegetable options, smoothies, coffee, and tea! Be sure to check out their website for any seasonal offerings!

With a dollar in your back pocket of the khaki Dickie pants that your mama bought from Southland Mall and a few coins that lay hiding in the crumb-filled corners of your backpack – your mission after school is to find the nearest Candy Lady to get as much food for as little money as possible.

“Aye, mane. I’m going to the Candy Lady after school.”

“Yeah, me too, foo.”

She doesn’t live far. Possibly between the school and your house or across the street from the school.

Maybe on the corner of your street or a few blocks away.

There’s no “OPEN” sign outside the door, but everyone knows she’s fully in business.

It’s the Candy Lady’s house.

In neighborhoods where access to grocery stores are scarce, the Candy Lady is an alternative for kids who may have missed breakfast or needed a “meal” after not being able to afford lunch at school. She may be a little scary or have an attitude, but she’s the main hustler on the block, flipping everything from candy to chips to nachos.

Her living room is stocked to the accent wall with snacks, and if you catch her on a good day, she’ll have Circle B’s or real pizza from Papa Johns or Dominos.

She’s the real hustle and flow. She’s the plug.

Hot pickles

Nachos

Peppermints

Chips

Laffy Taffy

Now & Later

Ring Pops

Snickers

Jolly Ranchers

WarHeads

Gummy Bears (no edibles)

Cry Babies

Fruities and Chews

If you had $3.00 in your pocket, you could buy a full meal.

“I went as often as my mama gave me money,” says Kanesha Johnson, a native Memphian and now attorney who graduated from Raleigh-Egypt High School. “When we got report cards, I really showed out because my mom would award me for good grades, and I was happy to spend my money with the candy lady.”

The candy lady is a staple for kids growing up in Memphis and hoods around the country. There is no other place where you could find two bags of Frooties for $0.50 or a Big K can soda for $0.75.

In the Summer months when the Memphis heat is beating your back after playing a game of four-square, she had cups of red Kool-aid, frozen in the depths of her deep freezer in the back of her house. In Memphis, they’re beloved known as freeze-cups. Either styrofoam or plastic, they are the summertime staple that kept the Candy Lady in business and one of the most loved women in the community. Either you enjoy them by sucking the top of the frozen, pint-sized iceberg, or flip the cup over and start your way from the bottom to the top.

Hot pickles and peppermints are a delicacy.

Hot chips with nacho cheese and jalapeno peppers and a Tahitian Treat is a combo meal.

She will sometimes set up shop across from the school nearest her home. Principals and teachers know her well and trust her presence near their students.

“Our candy lady was posted outside of our school most days,” says DeAndra Kelly, a graduate of Whitehaven High school. “I’m not sure where she stayed, but I would go right after school and straight home. She was my only stop.”

The Candy Lady is more than a woman who wanted to make an extra few dollars off the petty change of kids. This history of the Candy Lady evolves from a love of Black people and the pride in their communities. A woman who was often perceived as a motherly figure did more than supply candies and small snacks: she stands as a pillar in the community and a figure of love, justice and protection for Black children and their parents who needs extra eyes and hands to join the village that would participate in the development of their children.

She is a watchman. She stands as a sort of neighborhood watch. You know her by name and she knows you by face (because she was old and her cataracts were acting up). She’s children’s first introduction to entrepreneurship. She’s the precursor to the teen selling chips and juice throughout the halls of his highschool. She can count money backward so there’s never any getting over on her.  She’s a trusted community resource and is well aware of who belongs within the boundaries of her neighborhood, who is visiting for the summer, and those who are red flags to the safety of those babies.

“My mom was a Candy Lady when I was growing up,” says Mysharee McKinney, a graduate of Wooddale High School and a Social Services Counselor with Shelby County Juvenile Court.

“I remember kids from the neighborhood really flocked to her. She owned a daycare, too. A lot of the neighbors trusted her and our family. The kids really loved her, but she didn’t play either. She was a safe space for a lot of kids.”

Many of us owe our local Candy Lady. For watching us as we walked across busy streets to letting us slide on paying when we were short a quarter to knowing us by name and stepping in when our parents had to work overtime – or weren’t working at all. She’s a great example of what community activism looks and investing in our communities looks like from even a small gesture of love like selling snacks out of your house. She’s grit and grind. She’s love personified.

Give your candy lady a shoutout! Let us know if you know of any Candy Ladies in your neighborhood. We may just pull up on them one day this summer.

Fifteen years ago Chef Brandon had an awakening leading him to shed 125 pounds and take his weight from an unhealthy 300 pounds to a healthy 175 pounds. In February 2013, he discovered his allergic reaction to gluten and decided to take matters into his own hands. After 3 months of experimenting with gluten and grain-free recipes, he created his one of a kind Avocado Brownies. The delicious twist on the old favorite also does not contain refined sugar or butter. All ingredients are organic and sourced locally. Minimum $15 order for delivery. Free delivery for $125+ orders.

Oatmeal Chocolate Walnut Cookies from Insomnia Cookies

This bakery chain is known for its late-night deliveries, and their mouthwatering cookies, brownies, cookie cakes, and ice cream. We recommend the oatmeal chocolate walnut cookie. This spin on the classic oatmeal and raisins cookie is filled with chocolate chunks, walnuts, brown sugar, and rolled oats. You can order two cookies just for yourself, paired with a glass of cold milk. Or order fifty if you’re planning to entertain.

Bite-Sized Bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes

Founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz joined kitchens in 1997 with a simple goal: make cakes for their friends and family. Today Nothing Bundt Cakes is a nationwide brand built upon Dena and Debbie’s initial vision. Each bakery still has the warmth and nostalgia of its home-kitchen roots. We recommend trying their bite-sized Bundtinis. Flavors include chocolate-chocolate chip, red velvet, marble, white chocolate raspberry, pecan praline, confetti, carrot, lemon, and classic vanilla.

Ice Cream from Ben & Jerry’s

With more than 60 flavors, the national favorite that started in 1978 with two guys and a dream, is guaranteed to satisfy every one of your dessert cravings. From staples like their good old chocolate to their award-winning vanilla, Ben & Jerry’s colorful pints are recognizable all over the world. The Memphis location is locally owned and operated. You can order one scoop or two of your favorite flavor. They also serve sundaes, shakes, and fresh and pre-packed pints.
